Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
In 2010 it was found that 21% of the community population in Australia had either urinary or faecal incontinence*. That is 1 in 5 adults! Unfortunately, this number only rises with age and disability.
As such, Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is dedicated to helping both men and women suffering from
pelvic floor problems, such as incontinence. Based on comprehensive assessment, we provide
individualised treatment to help reduce and sometimes cure symptoms. On the other hand, you may
not be sure if your problems are related to the muscles and structures of the pelvis, Pelvic Floor
Physiotherapy can also help to identify this and rule out other contributors.
Physiotherapists with a special interest in Pelvic Heath manage a broad range of conditions, including:
Urinary leakage with physical activity, exercise, coughing, sneezing and laughing
Sudden and strong urges to go to the toilet
Pelvic organ prolapse – both vaginal and rectal
Pelvic pain
Coccyx pain
Constipation
Core and Postural stability
Low back pain
Pre and Post-natal care, including: diabetes, associated musculoskeletal conditions and safe
exercise
Information for Clients
A referral is not required to see a Physiotherapist with a special interest in Pelvic Health. If you are experiencing symptoms within the pelvic region, you can book a consultation over the phone or online, via the contact information below :
Pelvic Floor Treatment will likely involve 3 key steps:
1. Comprehensive assessment.
This will include a thorough review of your medical history and symptoms, followed by a physical assessment of the pelvis which may include Real Time Ultrasound.
2. Diagnosis and contributing factors.
The cause of your symptoms will be identified as well as any factors that may be contributing. Once this is established, your Physiotherapy can discuss treatment options and expected outcomes.
3. Treatment plan.
With consideration of your specific goals and key concerns, your treatment plan will then be developed. This may include techniques such as: pelvic floor or core muscle training, mindfulness or relaxation techniques, or bladder and bowel training.
Your First Appointment
As part of a comprehensive pelvic assessment, your Physiotherapist may suggest a Real-time Ultrasound assessment or an internal examination. This depends on what your Physiotherapist suspects is the cause of your symptoms.
An initial consultation will likely take 1 hour.
